More than just a classic breakfast food, grapefruit brings its tangy sweetness to its captivating aromatic profile! As an essential oil, grapefruit oil offers many aromatherapeutic benefits such as:
What is Grapefruit Oil?
A youngster compared to other citruses, the grapefruit first caught the attention of botanists and taste buds alike only 300 years ago. The Citrus x paradisi tree from which these yellow-orange fruits grow can be found in the subtropics of Brazil, Israel and the Americas, though it is believed to have originated in Asia. The tree can reach 30 feet tall and sports glossy, dark green leaves and white flowers in addition to its famous fruit.
In truth, the origin of grapefruits remains a botanical mystery. It is commonly believed that the fruit is a naturally occurring hybrid of shaddock and sweet orange. The first documentation of this “forbidden fruit” came about in 1750 when Welsh naturalist Rev. Griffith Hughes described it amongst his collection of specimens from the island of Barbados. It wasn’t long before the tangy taste of its pale yellow to richly ruby pulp became a staple of breakfast tables and a fancied flavor across a world of palates!
Grapefruit Essential Oil
A natural by-product of juicing, grapefruit oil is cold-pressed from the soft rinds. It takes approximately 1 ton of these sunny fruits to produce 1.5 pounds of its essential oil. Typically, grapefruit oil can be found labeled as either Pink or White, the white variety emitting a less sweet and slightly tarter fragrance.
The fruity aroma of grapefruit oil is perhaps most beloved for its ability to stimulate and refresh the senses. Much like its fellow citrus oils, it is sublimely energizing and uplifting—some would even say euphoric—as it helps to melt away occasional stress and tension. When combined with a carrier oil and applied topically, grapefruit oil can aid in the balancing of oily hair and skin, offering overall support in daily beauty routines.
Blending essential oils opens up a world of wellness possibilities! Other oils that complement grapefruit’s tangy fragrance include: bergamot, cardamom, cypress, geranium, lavender, lemon, lime, neroli, patchouli, rosemary, and sandalwood oils.
