What is African Mango?

Produced by a tall tropical tree, this exotic fruit scientifically known as Irvingia gabonensis is a member of the Irvingiaceae family. Due to its mango-like flesh, the African plant, cultivated in countries such has Cameroon and Guinea, is also sometimes called wild mango or bush mango. Unlike the more common mango, however, Irvingia gabonensis is valued for its seed or nut--the part used for its health-supporting African Mango extract.**

Known as a dika or ogbono nut in Central and West Africa, the dried edible African Mango seed has been incorporated into local wellness practices and dietary traditions for hundreds of years. It is widely used in ground form to thicken and impart added flavor in sauces and soups, as well as being a key ingredient in the dietary staple known as dika bread and some types of African chocolate.

The World Agroforestry Centre has reported that, among 3,000+ species of wild fruits found in Africa, the exotic African Mango is one of the most prized. The African Mango fruit has become an important part of African agricultural practices and is a chief reason why the African Mango tree has been tapped as one of the most important for domestication.

African Mango Diet Products

Here in the U.S., African Mango has become wildly popular as an herbal supplement. African Mango is abundant in soluble fiber, which absorbs water and swells in the stomach, imparting an ongoing feeling of satisfied “fullness.”** Soluble fiber also slows down the progress of food through the digestive tract, sustaining this satisfaction while promoting normal blood sugar stability, assisting with healthy appetite management.**

African Mango extract also contains oils that supply beneficial glycosides and various forms of ellagic acid, including tri-O-methyl-ellagic acid. These compounds may help optimize metabolism and influencing the “hunger hormone” leptin.** With its dense nutritional profile of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the bush mango is believed to support a cardiovascular profile that is associated with weight management, especially when combined with a healthy diet and exercise program.**

African Mango supplements are derived from the dried and ground seed of the fruit, which is regionally referred to as dika nut. The supplement is primarily offered as capsules or tablets.
