What is Beeswax?
A natural wax produced by honeybees, beeswax is an incredibly versatile and useful gift from nature! It is made via secretions from worker bees in the hive, and is originally clear. Over time, the wax becomes opaque and eventually the familiar yellow color thanks to the addition of pollen, pollen oils, and propolis. Honeybees use beeswax to create their distinct hexagonal honeycombs. Each tiny opening can be used to hold and keep their young safe, as well as to store honey and pollen.
While honeybees have important uses for beeswax, humans have also been utilizing this product for thousands of years, particularly in candle-making. The oldest surviving beeswax candles were found in an Alemannic graveyard in Oberflacht, Germany; these candles date back to the 6th century! Even more impressive is the oldest documentation of beeswax candles, dating back to the Han Dynasty in China to around 40 B.C.
Beeswax flakes or pellets are typically available in their familiar yellow color or bleached white. Some people prefer the bleached version in their candle making as it allows for colored dyes to be added to the mix. For a more natural looking candle, others will choose the yellow beeswax. An ideal medium for candles, beeswax can also be used to create balms, salves, and other skincare products, and even can be used around the home!
